The universities statistics from countries like the United Kingdom united states of America, Malaysia, China and Philippine has shown that students from Africa studying with them has constantly been increasing, of which over 70% are from Nigeria.
To re-ask this question Why Nigerian students prefer to study abroad, I will give some of my own answers based on some key reasons I observed and itemized accordingly in this article.
APPALLING CONDITION OF NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
Is there anything like good study environment? Well if there is not. I believe you will agree with me that one key reason Why Nigerian students prefer to study abroad is that of the horrifying condition of the universities.
One common feature in this reason is the massive populated lecture halls. In my life, I have never seen lecture halls that are as populated as those present in Nigerian universities.
Although from a side of view, this shows that we have minds who are eager and ready to always study in Nigeria. But the truth is the measure to use to manage such quest is too poor.
The burden is on the government that they seem to be frustrated about the whole thing. Also, lecturers on the other hands are not also helping matters too. Some even choose when to come to class, while others are looking for one reason or the other to deduct student's marks.
PROBLEM OF STRIKE
The academic staff union of Universities (ASUU) is one strong body in Nigeria, who is trying her best to make sure youths gain quality and assured education from the country. Although the way their issues keep erupting has caused a lot in the education system in Nigeria.
Imagine you spending six to seven years or even eight years at times for an undergraduate program scheduled for just four years. Now, this might sound like a problem generally observed, but is not. Colleagues from private universities will always have upper hand over those in federal and state universities.
Those from private universities will finish, crowed the labor market and be opportune to all advantages, leaving aside the remains of such advantages to those from federal and state universities. That is if ever they graduate in time.
EXPOSURE TO BETTER JOB OPPORTUNITIES
One other reason Why Nigerian students prefer to study abroad is the reality of being exposed to several opportunities out there. From records, most Nigerian students who came out top in universities abroad have in one way or the other been engaged in a job.
This is because the countries out there know how well to manage a vital organ like the brain of the human, not only that, they appreciate the excellent performances displayed. And as such, needs such a person (s) to contribute to their own society.
But here in Nigeria, if you like being a "Mr know all" as people may call it, I bet you if you are not connected firmly to the ground, nothing for you.
It takes only the grace of the Lord for one to see opportunity in this country. Most times, it comes as help, maybe as a result of good morals, respect for others and so on. But to come as a result of your academic excellence? It is very scared.
FORECHOICE OF FOREIGN CERTIFICATE OVER LOCAL ONCE
Now, the trending qualification in many organizations, industries and so on is when you project a foreign certificate to the Board of employers. Whether your knowledge is half of what Nigerian students can offer.
This reason also is great and I believe is one amongst Why Nigerian students prefer to study abroad. Although I don't blame the employers, due to the fact that they have been programmed to believe that Nigerian universities can really offer nothing to the world.
Imagine studying in an environment where everything is friendly and encouraging, you will agree with me that your mode of reasoning, judgments, and manner at which you approach problems will be very different.
This is because your environment welcomes you to good thoughts and better reasoning. As a result, your intellectual ability is developed to the fullest. The environmental pressure is reduced for you to see possibilities towards problem-solving.
One pronounced environmental problem not helping students in the country is SUN. although it is natural, then, the possibility of even running to a conducive classroom is zero, thereby making both in and out very unconducive for students to study appropriately.
SOPHISTICATED TEACHING METHOD
Anytime I see the way knowledge is being imposed into students in abroad, I always wish I can have the opportunity to be there forever. Well, it is not as if the knowledge is really different anyways.
But I can admit it is advanced and as such what is transferred to the students is up to date and the measures used to impart such knowledge is advanced too. Leading to a productivity that's very high.
In Nigeria, even our normal board we use to write out information are so old that you hardly differentiate writings from scratches. Although it is not in all universities.
Now the issue of projectors, I believe we will grow to the stage of constant use of projectors to study, but until then, the source of light will not even permit us to manage the one projector the whole department is even using.
This is very bad, and as such, I believe the statistics of students going for their studies will continually be on the increase side till the whole reasons are addressed properly.
BETTER STANDARD OF LIVING.
In a real sense, Nigeria has no way they can compare the standard of living to those advanced countries. As a result, students will do all it takes to secure a good place of study and at a long run end up in a good place of living.
At this point and with few of my important reasons, the question Why Nigerian students prefer to study abroad by looking for Study abroad consultant is answered. We hereby urge the government alongside management staff of the various universities to do their best in solving this problem, and make us believe they are no place like home.
